Greater Boston Divorce Lawyers
Divorce is one of the most challenging life events an individual will face. In Greater Boston, navigating the complexities of family law requires expert legal representation. A family law attorney becomes an expert in their field by continually improving their knowledge and skills, by having a combination of experience, ethical, communication skills, empathy, integrity and trust.
Ethical: A good family law attorney needs to be ethical because attorneys play a critical role in upholding the justice system and ensuring fair representation for clients. Attorneys have a professional responsibility to uphold high standards of professional and personal conduct.
Continuous learning: A good family law attorney must continue their education beyond law school and passing the Bar Exam. Attorneys in Massachusetts can continue their legal education through the Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education (MCLE). The law is an ever evolving and changing area, and MCLE’s allow attorneys to stay up to date on the constantly changing laws and regulations.
Laws are frequently amended, and new legal interpretations of the law constantly emerge, when an attorney participates with MCLE, they are able to stay informed and up to date on the new developments. An attorney needs to be up to date on all developments in their area of practice, to ensure that they are best able to advise their clients.
Communication: A good family law attorney is an individual who is able to listen attentively, explain complex legal concepts clearly and keep their clients updated on the progress of their case. An attorney should be responsive and return calls and emails promptly. Your attorney should keep you fully informed of all aspect of your case throughout the entire process. Not only should an attorney be able to explain legal concepts, but they should be actively listening to the client’s and anticipating issues that will arise. The attorney should clearly explain the legal process and the potential outcomes of your case. Which allows for the attorney to provide appropriate and on topic feedback and advice to the client.
A client should feel heard, understood and confident in their lawyer’s abilities to represent them. A client should be able to focus on the emotional aspects of their family law case, knowing that their legal interests are being handled with expertise and care.
Empathy: A good family law attorney should be compassionate and understanding of the sensitive nature of their clients’ matters. Family law cases involve some of the most intimate issues that an individual will go through. The cases often involve individuals at some of their lowest points and your attorney should genuinely care about their client’s well-being and the outcome of their case.
Integrity: A good family law attorney has integrity because they handle extremely sensitive information and help make crucial real-life decisions. These decisions have a profound impact on their client’s actual life. An attorney without integrity could potentially mislead their client and harm their client, financially and case wise.
Trust: A successful attorney-client relationship is built on trust. A good family law attorney should always be transparent, honest and ethical. Open and honest communication is essential to ensure that both you and your attorney are on the same page and are working towards the same goals. You need to have confidence in your family law attorney’s ability to best represent your interests.
But a good family law attorney should be candid about the likelihood of success or failure of the client’s desired outcomes and goals.
